The Task

Melbourne regularly makes it into 'top ten' lists: most livable cities, most sporting cities, most culturally diverse cities... But how much do you actually know about Australia's second largest city?

. The 2021 Community Impact Grant program will begin on February 1, 2021. There are new qualification guidelines for this program. Please review the program updates below. A total of $244 million was raised during 2019 for the humanitarian interventions, included in the oPt Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP). While this represents almost 70 per cent of the $351 million requested (the second highest rate in a decade), in absolute terms it marks the lowest amount raised during the 2010-2019 period for the oPt.

In groups of 4, your task is to conduct an in-depth exploration of the city of Melbourne, focusing on one aspect of Melbourne life, chosen from the list below. Your findings will be presented in a 3-5 minute documentary suitable for a segment on Channel 10's 'The Project'.

Areas of focus

Choose one focus area from the following list.

Literary Melbourne In Melbourne's mind

Musical Melbourne Humanitarian Melbourne

Sporting Melbourne Criminal and Commercial Melbourne

Linguistic Melbourne Scientific Melbourne

Artistic Melbourne

You are challenged to avoid the most obvious observations about your focus area; go beyond the tourist guide version of Melbourne, and explore its living, authentic, quirky heart.

Your exploration of Melbourne must be a personal one. In conducting your research, you must physically visit relevant sites of interest (virtual visits won't be enough). You need to record evidence of your visits, in the form of video, audio or still photos, and include these in your documentary.

To foster the spiritual and humanitarian ideals which Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda spreads throughout the world in the name of his Satguru Bhagwan Sri Deep Narayan Mahaprabhuji, his disciples have undertaken the task to build a big center which represents a home for all spiritual seekers and at the same time offers humanitarian aid to the needy.

Sri Vishwa Deep Gurukul Maheshwarananda Ashram Education & Research Center in Jadan, Dist. Pali, Rajasthan has been founded in 1990 as a Multicultural Center to promote the following principles:

  • Physical, mental, social and spiritual health
  • Respect for life of all living beings
  • Tolerance and understanding among all religions, cultures and nationalities
  • Protection of human rights and the environment

Ashram, which is still under construction, will be a center for spiritual aspirants of all nationalities and denominations as well as providing a hospital, a home for the aged or handicapped, an orphanage, an animal's refuge, a primary and a high-school as well as a University for Yoga and Sanskrit studies.

Every year numerous conferences, meetings and activities on public health, human rights, tolerance and world peace take place in Sri Vishwa Deep Gurukul Swami Maheshwarananda Ashram Education & Research Center.

In 1999 Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda organised global fundraising programs for the victims of the devastating cyclone in Orissa, India.

Through his initiative continuous humanitarian projects have been developed for the local area of Pali, Rajasthan, India, e.g. a support program for school-children, health care, water supply and fire-fighting service.

Paramhans Swami Madhavanand Austria Hospital

The construction of a naturopathic and allopathic hospital began in September 2002.
The Sri Swami Madhavananda Austria Hospital Project in India aims to
- offer compassionate service to the sick and needy;
- promotes a holistic approach to health care;
- fosters high standards in health-related education and research; and
- aims to provide adequate medical services for people.

Gyan Putra

This is the desert region of Rajasthan, dry & arid, and subject to long years of drought. Conditions are hard for those who live here - opportunities are limited. It is often the case that families cannot afford to send their children to school and frequently it is the girls that miss any chance of an education. By the grace of His Holiness Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda, Jadan's school was established in 2002. One of the most remarkable projects is the “Gyan Putra” scheme that commenced in 1998. It is designed to provide financial support for school children from poor families.

Swami Madhavanand Sarovar (Rain water Harvesting)

To address the major water crisis in the desert state of Rajasthan India, the International Sri Deep Madhavananda Ashram Fellowship has launched a Desert Rainwater Harvesting initiative. This Rajasthan initiative will utilise traditional Rainwater Harvesting techniques in conjunction with community based watershed management plans, to provide a sustainable model to be used in drought affected areas throughout the world.

Disaster Relief

In the past years there have been heavy droughts in the Pali District. The Society is active in providing drinking water by tanker and tractor tanker to needy villages during the emergency. During the drought of 2003 the Society was delivering around 80,000 litres of drinking water per day at distances of up to 45 kilometres from the Ashram.

Also, equipped with fire fighting equipment, the tanker and the fire-fighting team, available for fire fighting 24 hour a day, have several times shown their efficiency.

Education programs for women

The Society has also worked with the Indian Government to run residential courses for training of ladies about hygiene and child welfare. Graduates of the program are able to act as advisors within their local community on matters of child development, hygiene and on the education and development of girls up until their maturity.

Reforestation and ecological programs

The Jadan Ashram has a long term project of reforestation with the planting of around 5000 trees in 2002. To date there have been over 200,000 trees successfully planted in this area. The Ashrams organic farm aims to be a model for the local area as local farmers use pesticides excessively. There is an ongoing research in the production of natural pesticides from the local Neem tree. The Ashram produces organic vegetable, wheat, corn, barley and various seeds & spices.

The desert region of Rajasthan is a harsh environment to live in and the current drought is particularly hard on cattle let free by villagers who can no longer afford to feed them. Within the Jadan Ashram a large animal refuge has been built, which provides humane veterinary care for over 300 old, homeless and sick animals. One of the outcomes of the reforestation project is the fresh fodder for the animals. This increased nutrition enhances their recovery to good health.
